Design as a concept - Part 2

In a previous article I wrote about the importance of alignment and also about visual hierarchy when in comes to good design. In this part 2 of Design as a concept, I'll show you more hands on how you can work with both alignment and visual hierarchy in your designs.

Ok, so we are going to work with the example below and our goal is to improve the overall impression of the design by working with visual hierarchy and alignment.

At first glance this might not look that bad but there are most definitely room for a lot of improvement!

Step 1.

First of all we need to decide where our focal point should be. The focal point is the visual most important object. In this example the image of the woman is the focal point. The woman in the image looks professional, yet warming and welcoming. This example is also a single attorney, not a whole law firm, so makes sense to highlight the person behind the company.

To make the image be the Queen of visual hierarchy I chose to add a contrast color as background and an extra frame behind the image to add a little bit of an edge to the design. I chose the green emerald color cause it goes well with the impression you get from the woman in the image. A professional yet warming and welcoming feeling.

Step 2.

Alright, so we chose our focal point now it's time to make the typography a little bit more interesting. Again we want to work with visual hierarchy to enhance the most important objects in the design.

And this is what I ended up with! I chose two different fonts that goes well together. I increased the font size of the title since that is the most important object in this section. I also aligned the text to make a more cohesive impression. I still want the image to be the focal point so I've been careful not letting the text section take too much focus.

Ok so this is looking quite good at this point but there is one more detail we can adjust to make this really top notch!

Step 3.

I added the final touch by changing the color of the menu and button that is displayed on top of the green section.

This makes it much easier to read the menu and gives a much lighter overall impression of the design. I also highlighted the "Call Now" button.

And our design is now complete! This example really shows what you can achieve with just doing some small adjustments to your design.

And remember that you do not have to invent the wheel all over again or be super creative and come up with new ground breaking designs! There are plenty of really creative and excellent designers before you that has already done that. And the really cool thing is that we can learn from, and get inspired from, their designs. Of course we should not copy designs but we can most definitely practice making something similar.

So study the pro designer that you really like and try to replica their designs and as so you progress incorporate more of your own ideas.
